One will talk about helpdesk support.

Another will talk about cybersecurity.

Another will start naming software tools until your eyes glaze over and you begin reconsidering every life decision that led you into that meeting.

Manufacturers need a better answer.

Because managed IT for manufacturers should not be a collection of software licenses wrapped in a monthly bill.

It should help keep the operation running.

That’s the job.

Your technology touches quoting, scheduling, purchasing, production, quality, shipping, inventory, engineering, customer communication, and accounting. On the plant floor, it may also support scanners, tablets, HMIs, machine connectivity, production reporting, cameras, and other systems people depend on every shift.

When those systems work, nobody pays much attention.

When they stop working, everybody does.

So what should managed IT for manufacturers actually include?

Let’s break it down.

1. Proactive Monitoring and Maintenance

Managed IT should start before somebody submits a ticket.

Servers, workstations, network equipment, backups, storage, and other critical systems should be monitored so problems can be identified before they become outages whenever possible.

That doesn’t mean technology will never fail.

Anything with a power cord eventually finds a creative way to ruin somebody’s morning.

But proactive monitoring can help identify warning signs such as low disk space, failed backup jobs, offline equipment, unusual performance, and other conditions that deserve attention.

Maintenance matters too.

Operating systems and software need patches.

Firmware needs updates.

Security tools need attention.

Old equipment needs replacement plans.

And in manufacturing, this work should be coordinated around production whenever possible.

“Reboot everything Wednesday at noon” may work at a law office.

It probably won’t make you many friends on first shift.

2. Fast Helpdesk Support That Understands Production Priorities

Not every ticket is equal.

The printer in HR refusing to print in color isn’t the same problem as 30 scanners losing connectivity in shipping.

Your IT support process should understand the difference.

That means the helpdesk needs enough context about your operation to recognize what’s critical.

Support should also have a clear escalation process when remote troubleshooting isn’t enough.

Manufacturing still has plenty of physical infrastructure.

Cybersecurity isn’t optional managed IT anymore.

Your network isn’t just the stuff behind the server-room door anymore.

It’s part of production infrastructure.

Wireless barcode scanners.

Tablets.

Quality stations.

Engineering workstations.

Machine interfaces.

Warehouse systems.

Production reporting.

All of them depend on connectivity.

What needs to come back first?

ERP?

File servers?

Engineering data?

Domain services?

Production applications?

How long can the company operate without them?

How much data can you afford to lose?

Those questions should be answered before an emergency.

A provider should also help determine whether backups are adequately protected from the same ransomware or system failure that might damage the production environment.

Backup is about having data.

Disaster recovery is about getting the business running again.

You need both.

6. ERP, MRP, and Business Application Coordination

Your IT provider may not be your Epicor, Plex, JobBOSS, SAP, NetSuite, or other ERP consultant.

That’s fine.

But they shouldn’t shrug and disappear every time the ERP vendor gets involved.

ERP performance can depend on servers, storage, databases, networks, endpoint configuration, internet connectivity, cloud services, and integrations.

Your managed provider should own the infrastructure pieces and coordinate with application specialists when necessary.

The same goes for CAD/CAM systems, shipping applications, label software, quality platforms, machine-monitoring tools, and other line-of-business technology.

You don’t need an IT company that claims it knows everything.

Nobody does.

You need one that takes ownership of finding the answer.

7. Vendor Management

This one doesn’t sound exciting.

Until you need it.

Manufacturers work with a pile of technology vendors.

Internet providers.

Phone companies.

ERP consultants.

Controls contractors.

Machine vendors.

Software developers.

Cloud providers.

Security providers.

Printer companies.

When something breaks between two vendors, the manufacturer often gets stuck in the middle.

A mature managed IT relationship should reduce that burden.

Your provider should help document vendor relationships, maintain support information, gather technical details, open cases, participate in troubleshooting, and coordinate issues involving multiple parties.

Your operations team has enough to do.

It shouldn’t also have to referee a cage match between the ERP consultant and the firewall vendor.

8. Hardware Lifecycle and Technology Planning

Manufacturing has a habit of keeping equipment alive.

Sometimes impressively so.

The PC running a critical application might be old enough to legally rent a car.

If it works, nobody wants to disturb it.

Fair enough.

But “don’t touch it” isn’t a lifecycle strategy.

Your managed provider should maintain visibility into workstations, servers, network equipment, warranties, operating systems, and other technology approaching end of life.

Then you can plan replacements instead of funding emergencies.

Good documentation isn’t glamorous.

Neither is changing oil.

Do it anyway.
